“Consider a building with a few broken windows. If the windows are not repaired, the tendency is for vandals to break a few more windows. Eventually, they may even break into the building, and if it’s unoccupied, perhaps become squatters or light fires inside.

Or consider a pavement. Some litter accumulates. Soon, more litter accumulates. Eventually, people even start leaving bags of refuse from take-out restaurants there or even break into cars.” James Q. Wilson march- 1982

The next video is brief explanation of the broken window theory, also there are some examples of how some governments have used this theory to improve the security in cities, just by “repairing the broken windows”.

Stress is a result of an excessive of physical or psychological demands by an individual, the outcome of this stimulation on the brain, is often the cause of many conflicts that people have to deal with .The stress you get from an environment (work e.g) it’s easily transformed in an undesirable response  in another environment (home e.g). Many of our sources of stress come from windows that we have braked. The theory says, once one window is broken and it is not fixed, the tendency of more windows to get broken is higher.

The theory doesn’t necessary have to be related to neighborhoods, public transportation, etc. As individuals we have many windows that we need to keep clean and functional. One of the easiest examples on how can we brake a window is in our home. For some people a simple detail such as the dirty dishes could be an example; the pile just starts growing and growing. It always starts with a cup then its a plate, then a whole day of dishes and so on. Same thing could happen with laundry, mail, etc. All this mess some psychologists says will occupy space in our brain. This will create some psychological demand that together with other problems that surround us could easily be transformed into stress, in the same way that a broken window in a neighbourhood become violence.

These broken windows don’t necessary have to be a physical object as the theory explains. A broken window could  also be a behavior or and attitude. that without noticing it not just can become a bad habit. It can also influence  in a negative way people around us, our friends, our family etc. By this blog post I invite you to identify the broken windows you have and to fix them.
